Tang Jianping
COMPOSER

When I was commissioned with this material at the end of 2016, I still doubted that it would be completed on time. The theme of the opera is laden with historical pain that far exceeded my imagination. The challenge of creating, under time pressure, a work that addresses the great questions of survival and human development appealed to me. I make art to defend human dignity and to praise the most fundamental and noble human feelings.
Like a red thread, echoes of Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor run through the entire score. Beginning in gloom, the work goes through transformations and emotional ups and downs to finally rise to a melody of light. The most important musical theme of the opera is love, expressed through the strings. Chinese feelings are reflected in the melodies that transcend the evening.
