OVERVIEW

KUNG FU IT. explores how a culturally precise idea can be translated into a contemporary Nike narrative. The starting point was the original meaning of Kung Fu: not martial arts, but a skill formed through time, discipline, and repetition. This became the conceptual bridge to Nike Free, a product built around natural movement rather than excess support. From that alignment, the project developed into a film concept about strength, control, and endurance earned through consistent practice.

OBJECTIVE

The task was to build a speculative Nike case study in which cultural meaning, product logic, and visual storytelling operate as one system. Instead of relying on slogans or performance language, the concept had to express progress through repetition and consistency. The ambition was to create a project that works strategically as well as visually.

NIKE FREE 1

INSIGHT

The project led to a clear creative conclusion:

process can carry more authority than proclamation. This insight informed the entire direction of the work. It also revealed that Nike Free could be positioned not as comfort technology, but as a tool for disciplined movement and gradual transformation.

Concept

The starting point of this project was the development of a speculative 30-second Nike brand film that reinterprets Kung Fu in its original meaning.

In Chinese culture, 功夫 describes ability formed through time, repetition, and discipline. Instead of portraying martial arts, the film focuses on effort accumulated over time. 

CULTURAL CALIBRATION

In Chinese communication culture, mastery is rarely proclaimed directly.

Influenced by Confucian values, competence is demonstrated through consistency and discipline rather than explicit declarations of strength.

This insight led to a conceptual shift: from status to process, from declaration to certainty.

CORE MESSAGE

The central line of the film expresses this idea:

The term 练成功夫 describes inner steadiness without exaggeration.

Authority shifts from ego to the learning process itself.

 

功夫教会我笃定

KUNG FU TEACHES ME CERTAINTY

CINEMATIC STRUCTURE

The visual structure follows this philosophy.

 

Chongqing becomes a physical training system. Its vertical architecture transforms the city into a metaphor for continuous effort.

Changes in weather — heat, rain, dawn and night — mark time and repetition under different conditions.

PRODUCT INTEGRATION

The product appears not as the source of strength but as a tool within the process. A macro slow-motion shot of the shoe compressing during push-off visualizes energy transfer and control. The film closes with three terms:

掌控 – Control

节奏 – Rhythm

攀升 – Ascent
